Senior Systems Engineer - Operations

Position Overview

As a senior member of the Systems Operations group, you will be responsible for enabling tools and process automation for handling lab and data center infrastructure to ScaleArc product teams. You will be someone with passion to optimize the use of our resources and thought leader in automation of our QA, Development teams for their processes. This position is based in Santa Clara CA and reports to the Director of Operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain the core infrastructure components of ScaleArc’s database traffic management products.
  • Collaborate with the members of engineering and Product management teams to build features and troubleshoot challenging problems.
  • Possess expertise in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices.
  • Stay ahead of the technology curve and make recommendations about technologies to build current and future products.
  • Ensure corporate security policies are followed and updated when necessary recommend and implement new security policies and processes.

Required Skills

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in systems operations (ie: SysAdmin, Systems QA, setting up and managing IT infrastructure using a variety of open source and licensed tools)
  • BS or higher degree in Science/Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Ability to evaluate, implement and utilize a wide variety of open source technologies and tools
  • Experience working in multiple cloud platforms (ie: AWS, Azure, Google Compute)
  • Ability to code and script in both Python and Bash
  • Experience with systems and IT operations
  • Comfort with frequent, incremental code testing and deployment
  • Strong grasp of automation tools
  • Data management skills
  • Familiarity with network storage systems (ZFS, FreeNAS, OpenFiler, ISCSI)
  • Working experience of TCP/IP, creating multiple networks, subnets and understanding of setting up rules for access control and bandwidth shaping
  • Familiarity with setting up database like MS SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle
  • Familiarity with commonly used data center products and concepts (ie: HA, Replication, RAID, etc.).
  • Familiarity of setting up Software Defined Data Centers a strong preference
  • Experience with monitoring and responding to Nagios alerts and taking action.
  • Understanding of L4 to L7 services (ie: Load balancing, Firewall, Application Firewall, NAT, etc.) architectures and algorithms
  • Fluency on Linux setup and debugging - especially with networking and building aspects
  • Proficient in scripting languages like Python, Perl, shell and fluent on Unix/Linux development environment, experience with build engineering required
  • Knowledge of server virtualization technologies like ESXi, KVM, Xen, HyperV; a plus
  • Knowledge and experience of software development processes and methodologies in a software company with short release cycles
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Good communication skills to work with cross-functional groups
